The Foundation of Our Foundation

Ucal D. McKenzie, a native of Jamaica was a vibrant and passionate young man who lived every day to the fullest, as if each was a vital puzzle piece to the legacy he’d ultimately leave behind too soon. As if every person he met, touched, helped, inspired, laughed with, and loved was a unique, yet integral part of his world. Not because he needed to impress or had an ego to satisfy, but because he truly wanted to make a difference in other peoples’ lives.

This philosophy is the heart of what we’re trying to accomplish -- one of the two foundations of Breakaway Foundation, if you will.

Ucal was many things: friend, husband, brother, son, guidance counselor, coach, teammate. A doer and one of life’s many unsung heroes who took up any task that was put before him. Who never missed a moment to give of his time. Who never said “no,” “can’t,” or “won’t” – especially when it came to his greatest passion outside of his family and friends:

Soccer.

If selflessness and a passion for life is our Breakaway Foundation’s heart, then soccer is our soul. Ucal’s greatest joy was passing on – soccer pun intended -- his love of this beloved worldwide sport, and teaching others that the hard work and camaraderie necessary for success on the field, can also mean success off the field. Hence the words that you’ll throughout this web site: “Discipline, determination, dedication. For soccer and life.”

Whether it was as head coach of Newton North High School or a midfielder for the Bay State Soccer League, Ucal’s was a spirit that buoyed his team in victory and defeat. His is the legacy that the Breakaway Foundation seeks to continue via its youth soccer clinics in building. And we hope you’ll join the team.
