An 87 Year Old College Student Named Rose

Posted by: Sun Jae Song

The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t already know.

I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned round to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being.

She said, “Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?”

I laughed and enthusiastically responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a giant sq

Q&A With Executive Director, Suzanne McKenzie

Posted by: Luis Vasquez

My CRLS Soccer coach (2002-2006), Ucal McKenzie, was incredibly understanding of the fact that success on the soccer field comes from way beyond the lines of the pitch. He became a big brother, a father figure to many. Sadly in 2009, Ucal passed away at the age of 32 playing the game he so cherished. His wife, Suzanne, almost immediately drafted up a plan to keep his legacy alive; the Ucal McKenzie Breakaway Foundation was born. I am privileged to serve on the board of directors for the foundatio

BLOG: Present

Today is a present
Imagine a bank that deposited 86,400 dollars to your account each day
No roll-over.. you HAD to spend it that day.

Every night the money you dont spend of that amount, it disappears.
What would you do?
Obviouly you would withdrawy it all, everyday.

Time is like this bank to us. Everyday, we revieve 86,400 seconds, amd every night, what we dont spend disappears.

There is no leftover.
We cannot use more than that either.
Everyday this bank gives us more money to sp

BLOG: With A Broken Heart

Posted by: Sun Jae Song

First of all, I have to extend my condolences to the children, families, and friends of those who were affected by the tragedy that occurred yesterday. What I read and heard about the Sandy Hook shootings deeply troubled my heart and put into perspective how delicate life is and how we should not take anything for granted.

At the same time, it made me think about all the problems we have in the world about violent crimes. This isn’t a post about gun control or the issues surrounding that.

BLOG: Never Forget U

Posted by: Sun Jae Song

On this day three years ago, I experienced one of the toughest moment of my life.

I still remember every detail of that fateful hour, down to the minute. As I stood there waiting for the ambulance, waiting for him to wake up, I thought back on all the talks and memories I had with him.

Three years on, his teachings and values, I hope, have changed me into a better man. His legacy is in me—that I live a life that he did.

When a man passes, I realize, we eventually move on. The pain

BLOG: We are ONE

Posted by: Sun Jae Song

On Saturday, March, 17th, 2012, Fabrice Muamba, a player for Bolton Wanderers and a player I have admired ever since his days as an Arsenal youth player (my favorite team), collapsed during a FA Cup match against Tottenham Hotspur.

He is 23 year old with the whole world in front of him.

I wasn’t watching the game live, but when I heard about it I scurried through the internet, finding every bit of information about what happened, how it happened, and how he was doing.

The signs didn’

BLOG: Choices

Posted by: Sun Jae Song

Every day, each person thinks over 70,000 thoughts and makes thousands of decisions. How to act in certain situations, what to say, where to look. In each of those decisions, there may or may not be a right answer.

In what we eat, it seems as if there seems to always be a right answer. Whether to add a second teaspoon of sugar into my iced coffee or to purchase some skittles for immediate consumption, with food it seems as if there is always a better decision. We are what we eat, so shoul

BLOG: Ballack to MLS?

Posted by: Sun Jae Song

Rumors about former Chelsea and Bayern Munich superstar Michael Ballack signing with Major League Soccer has been roaming around lately.

I, for one, think that this would be great for the league.

The arrival of David Beckham required the league to create a “designated player” rule which allows teams to have players not count towards the salary cap, thus allowing them to pay the player a much higher salary than what is normal. (Beckham currently gets paid $6.5m; the average salary is a

Early September, 2007. It was my senior year of high school and we were in a tight, intense game against Medford. I received the ball right around midfield with a player on my back. I saw a second defender charging towards me, so I dragged the ball back away from him while shifting my body to keep my center of gravity low. Instead of stopping, the defender ran into me. We both fell to the ground and rightly so, a foul was called. I got up immediately and aggressively. I stood over him ominous

BLOG: A Flashback That Keeps Me Going

Posted by: Luis Vasquez

It was fall of 2004, we were headed to an out of league game versus Lowell High School. It was cold. My feet were freezing, and if you’ve played soccer before then you know that the ball seems to weigh an extra 10 pounds when that happens.

We go through warm-ups, and the whole pre-game routine. I remember some of our players feeling intimidated because the Lowell players were bigger than us. They strike first and take a 1-0 lead, which they held onto for most of the game. Then we scored wit
